Mississippi Carver Wins Inaugural ECHO Carving Series
LAKE ZURICH, Ill. (October 18, 2005) – Dayton Scoggins, a former Mississippi River tugboat captain from Heidelberg, MS, won the inaugural ECHO Carving Series, a showcase competition between award-winning chain saw sculptors. The Championship was held October 14-16 at the 2005 OPEI EXPO in Louisville, KY.

Nine competitors qualified for the championship by competing in three preliminary events:
• The Oregon Divisional Championships
Reedsport, OR
June 16-19, 2005
• Westport (The Big One) Chain Saw Competition
Westport, WA
August 3-7, 2005
• Chain Saw Carving on the Mighty Mississippi
Quincy, IL
October 7-9, 2005
Scoggins won a cash prize, a Ducks Unlimited-edition Yamaha Grizzly 660 ATV in Max4 Advantage pattern, the ECHO Carving Cup, and an ECHO CS-520 Chain Saw for his piece entitled “The Price of Freedom” based on the event theme “America: The New World, Then and Now”.

Second place, awarded to Luke Harris of Alton, IL for his piece entitled, “Let Freedom Ring”, consisted of a cash prize, a Yamaha Inverter 1000EFiS Generator and an ECHO CS-520 Chain Saw.

Third place was awarded to Mark Colp of Lakeport, CA for his piece entitled, “The Ancient Spirits of America” and consisted of a cash prize and an ECHO CS-520 Chain Saw.

All nine sculptures were auctioned to attendees of the EXPO with the artists taking home all proceeds.

The event was a prime attraction at EXPO, with thousands of onlookers watching the logs transform from 7’ high, non-descript tree trunks to works of art. ECHO is a proud sponsor and long-standing supporter of this unique art form and pleased to crown the inaugural winner of the ECHO Carving Series.
